Abstract

The quality of life (QoL) in the Alps is facing several challenges (climate change, closure of services of general interest, etc.). To tackle these challenges, local communities should be well equipped in governance, i.e. they should be able to monitor the QoL, identify local needs, integrate the topic of QoL into policymaking, and thereby making the policy-making process more inclusive. Thus, the GOVQoL project classifies as “roll-out project” as it empowers Alpine communities with better governance capacities by introducing them to existing tools and instruments focused on QoL. Overall aims are two-fold: (i) improve the skills of the local administration and, (ii) increase stakeholders’ awareness in how they can be more proactive in the QoL as policy issue. The major outcomes are (1) awareness raising seminars, (2) on-site workshops with local communities to evaluate the state of the art and (3) prepare place-based roadmaps for how to consider QoL in policy making on long-term basis, and (4) an umbrella roadmap for the Alpine area.

The existing governance instruments will be gathered in a handbook, available in all Alpine languages. As the project directly targets local communities, the selected approach relies on capacity-building processes and participative techniques. The approach is also place-based since each of the selected local communities design their own place-tailored roadmaps for a better QoL.      Researchers
