Content (Syllabus outline)
Lectures:
- Short overview of gastrointestinal anatomy and function.
- Transport of macronurients (aminoacids, fat, carbohydrates) through cell membrane in gastronitestinal system.
- Intrinsic and extrinsic gastrointestinal control, gastric secretion, short intestine function.
- Short overview of macronutrient metabolism.
- Metabolic stages in the body (absorptive, postabsorptive).
- Nutrition status, energy bilance, metabolic rates (basal, resting, total).
- Methodology for the assessment of metabolic rates in humans (direct and indirect calorimetry, oxygen consumption).
- Body temperature regulation, physical pathways of heat gain and heat loss.
- Maintenance of body mass, water and electrolyte homeostasis, and acid-base balance.
Seminar work:
Nutrition for specific groups and environments (children, elderly people, sportsmen).

Prerequisites for course work:
- inscription to the MSc Nutrition study.
