Content (Syllabus outline)

Lectures:

  • Short overview of gastrointestinal anatomy and function.
  • Transport of macronurients (aminoacids, fat, carbohydrates) through cell membrane in gastronitestinal system.
  • Intrinsic and extrinsic gastrointestinal control, gastric secretion, short intestine function.
  • Short overview of macronutrient metabolism.
  • Metabolic stages in the body (absorptive, postabsorptive).
  • Nutrition status, energy bilance, metabolic rates (basal, resting, total).
  • Methodology for the assessment of metabolic rates in humans (direct and indirect calorimetry, oxygen consumption).
  • Body temperature regulation, physical pathways of heat gain and heat loss.
  • Maintenance of body mass, water and electrolyte homeostasis, and acid-base balance.

 

Seminar work:

Nutrition for specific groups and environments (children, elderly people, sportsmen).

  • inscription to the MSc Nutrition study.
