Content (Syllabus outline)

1. Introduction to cell biology:
 - Building elements of organisms,

- Cell structure, organization and functioning,

- Specialized cells: muscle cells and mammary gland cells

 - Cell division,

- Immunological aspects of animal breeding (innate / acquired immunity, the importance of immunizations).


2. Introduction to animal genetics:

- History of genetics,

 - Basic concepts in genetics (DNA, RNA, protein, translation, transcription, mutation)

- Modes of inheritance, Mendel rules

 - Mutations and common genetic markers

 - Genetic analyses (PCR reaction, electrophoresis, restriction analysis, sequencing)

- Crossing systems in domestic animals,

- Fundamentals of biotechnology in application in domestic animals.
 

 

3. Introduction to animal science:

 - Importance of the state and tendencies of development of animal husbandry,

 - Domestication of farm animals, basic overview of domestic animal breeds,

 - Reproduction of domestic animals

 - Mammary gland (gland development and function, milk composition,

 - Man-animal relationship.

 

4. Growth and development:
 - Definition of growth, types of growth curves, factors influencing growth,

 - Prenatal and postnatal growth,

 - Differential growth (individual tissues and chemical components, alometrical equations)

 - Alternative growth

 - Structure and function of muscle and adipose tissue.

Prerequisites

Prerequisites for inclusion in the work:

Enrolment in the corresponding year of study programme.
