Content (Syllabus outline)
As introduction the importance of soils for agricultural production is presented. Soil formation and development is explained regarding soil forming factors as parent material, climate, relief and biological factors as well as soil forming processes rocks weathering, organic matter transformation, structure development, soil colour phenomena, horizons development, migration processes, gleying and pseudogleying. Also human impacts caused by agricultural activities (anthropogenisation) are discussed in connection to artificial substrata. Soil morphology is introducing soils composition and theirs properties: texture, structure and porosity. Soil water is discussed from chemical and physical point of view as a linkage between solid, liquid and gaseous substances of soils realizing sorption and puffer ability and oxido-reduction potential of soils. The course concludes presenting diversity and geographical distribution of soils in Slovenia with guidance to apply international soil names, especially in EU documents. A methodology of soil production potential evaluation is presented including some practical examples.
