Content (Syllabus outline)

The students will be informed of microbiology as a scientific discipline and profession. At the same time students will learn the basic principles of scientific thinking and how the search for new knowledge and evaluate it. The historical review of the development of microbiology will be given meets areas and applied aspects of the gained knowledge presented.

The students will be briefly acquainted with growth requirements of prokaryotic and eukaryotic microbial groups and with main physical and chemical environmental factors affecting growth, such as temperature, pH, redox state, water activity, gaseous environment, light, nutrients and growth factors. Basics features of microbial morphology, reproduction, microbial ecology, microbial diversity present in various habitats, and of microbial interactions will be presented. Students will be briefly acquainted with the role of microorganisms in health and disease of higher organisms: plants, animals and humans. They will learn about the possibilities of exploitation of microorganisms in biotechnological use in agriculture, food and beverages industry, pharmaceutics, and in the environmental protection.

Prerequisites

a. Entry in the 1st Year of the first Level program
b. Passed seminar and / or colloquium as a prerequisition for accession to the final exam.
