Content (Syllabus outline)

  • The importance of agriculture, structure and management of agricultural lands, regional characteristics, comparison to EU and other countries.
  • Basic principles of sustainable rearing of animals. Animals and environmentally friendly farming. Ethical aspects of animal rearing.
  • Types of agriculture and agricultural production in relation to eating habits, level of self-supply, consumption and trends in Slovenia, EU and other countries.
  • The position of animal production, basic production systems, farm structure and trends. The importance of animal production within the agriculture and widely.
  • Domestication, origins, the development of breeds. Species, categories and basic (the most important) breeds of domestic animals. Evaluating exterior of the domestic animals.
  • Biodiversity and animal production. The overview of animal genetic resources by species, management and estimation of opportunities, development, type of usage and preservation.
  • Animal production and food production (nutritive pyramid). Other utilization of animals and their products.
  • Comparison of the effectiveness of the exploitation of energy and proteins from agricultural products in individual species and production choices, the principles of competition between man and animal in consumption of plant nutrients.
  • Biological foundations and overview of various production technologies of milk, meat, egg and other animal products and relations between animal production and environmental sustainability. Aquaculture.
  • Basic principles of selection in animal production, the importance of biotechnical measurements and modern biometrical methods for increasing the economy of animal production.
  • The importance of animal health, immunity and decisions for longevity and lifelong production. Basic legislation in animal production and comparison among species of domestic animals in Slovenia and common European market.
