Source of funding

The system for determination of micromechanical properties of surfaces of wood, composites and woodworking tools consists of an anti-vibration platform "Step 300", which allows the attachment of one measuring head, which in this case is the MCT3 head. Automatic movement in 3 axes is enabled, and an optical microscope with 5x, 20x and 50x objectives and a computer with the necessary software are added.

The MCT3 head enables:

  • indentation (50 mN to 10 N)
  • determination of Vickers hardness (up to 30 N)
  • determination of hardness with a Vickers or Rockwell diamond indenter
  • scratching loads: (0.01 N to 30 N)
  • indentation depth: up to 1000 µm

The system has an automatic detection for critical loads. Using the signal of friction force, penetration depth, or acoustic emission, an algorithm analyses these signals and automatically determines the critical loads without subjecting them to any operator influence. Furthermore, hardness and elastic modulus can be determined at various positions (user defined matrix) in a single measurement by the instrumented indentation technique.

Access

The system for determination of micro-mechanical properties of surfaces of wood, composites and woodworking tools is available by prior arrangement in the Laboratory for surface treatment at the Chair of Adhesives, Wood Composites, Surface Treatment and Construction, Rožna dolina, C. VIII / 34 (Department of wood science and technology).

Purpose

The research equipment is intended for determination of mechanical properties of surfaces of various solid materials: hardness, modulus of elasticity, coating adhesion strength, resistance against scratching and abrasion, creep, etc.
